The Design
Gordon designed the home's living room, master bedroom, and daughter's bedroom. Because the redesign was intended as a surprise for the family, Gordon was not able to visit the home or talk with them ahead of time. She had a rough layout of the floor plan that was sketched from memory by the home's new contractor, along with measurements of the rooms – but she did not know many details, including the locations of doors or windows.
Gordon had two days to put together the entire plan down to the last detail. Because Boyles wanted to create a showplace for the family, Gordon's design included a large assortment of furniture and accessories – such as beds, sofas, tables and chairs, artwork, window treatments, throws, pillows, rugs and decorative items. |
The Extra Touches
Along with special greetings for the homeowner's daughter, Gordon's design included some other surprise touches for the family. |
The “Inside Line”
Even though she could not meet the family, Gordon had some “inside” design help for one room in particular – the little girl's bedroom. Knowing that the girl was nine years old, Kathy turned to her own ten-year-old daughter, Emily, for advice.
The Installation
The Boyles team had one full day – Monday, October 9 – to install and decorate two New Orleans homes, including Gordon's project. When they arrived, they divided their time between both homes – prepping the homes for the installation, then loading and decorating several rooms in each home. The installation included not just furnishings and accessories, but also the extra touches that dress up a room – from fruit-filled bowls to fresh-cut flowers.

The Reveal
The home was revealed to its owners the next morning via
live satellite during a taping of The Dr. Phil Show , where
the homeowners were guests. The homeowners had been invited to Los
Angeles to participate in a show about the dishonest contractor –
but they had no idea that their home was being refurnished in their
absence. Gordon was unable to witness the actual reveal due to her
duties in New Orleans , but she is looking forward to watching the
show when it airs.
